Let us take you on a journey to the land that has been sought after, conquered, and celebrated as the jewel of the Mediterranean for over 5000 years. Malta, and its’ islands, have an illustrious past stretching back to the Temple Builders, Phoenicians, Arabs, Knights of Malta, French and finally British rule leading to its modern-day independence. It is a little-known fact that the oldest free-standing structures in the world are found in Malta, one thousand years older than the pyramids of Egypt. Adding to its significant history marked by palaces, fortifications, cathedrals and other landmarks, exist a plethora of quaint villages with their narrow meandering streets, beaches, countryside walks and a culture that is sure to warm you.

Located virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean a mere 93 kilometers south of Sicily and 288 kilometres north of Africa, the Maltese archipelago consists of three islands.  Matla, Gozo and Comino.  Malta is the largest of the three islands and is the cultural and commercial centre.  You will be staying in Valletta while in Malta, the capital city.  This landmark city was built by the Knights of Malta.  Gozo, the second largest island, is more rural, characterized by tourism, fishing and agriculture.  The third and smallest island is Comino which is largely uninhabited.

Valletta has been richly awarded the title of European Capital of Culture for 2018.  During your journey to Malta, you have opportunity to share in this celebrated designation.  The Birgufest will take place during your stay (Oct 2018 Journey only), a festival to celebrate the arts and culture.  The entire ancient city is lit at night by candlelight.

This itinerary is arguably the very finest Malta experience for small groups wishing to become immersed in all things Maltese.
