September 30 – October 6, 2023
6 – Days
They are often called “The Plain People” characterized by separation from the world and simple living, including plain dress. While many of their practices may seem quaint and old-fashioned, in reality, they are expressions of their inner beliefs. Step back in time and experience this remarkable culture which shuns technology and many modern comforts for a simpler way of living. Here in the midst of a modern world, you will find a unique lifestyle which most people do not know exists.
Day 1 CORNWALL-ERIE, PA. We will cross into the USA via the Ivy Lea Bridge and stop just north of Syracuse for lunch. This evening will find us overnighting in Erie, PA.
Day 2 ERIE -WALNUT CREEK, OHIO. Holmes County in the northeast region of Ohio is our destination today, stopping first at The Amish & Mennonite Heritage Centre to see The Behalt Mural. You will even pick up tips about the different styles of Amish ladies caps! Your first sample of Dutch Valley fare at lunch time will be in Sugar Creek. This is an independent lunch. Groups from previous visits have been rendered speechless when they first lay eyes on the tranquil setting of our accommodations in Walnut Creek. Add to that the sounds of rolling buggy wheels and the clopping of horses’ hooves as they roll by the front verandah, you will realize that you are staying in a uniquely different part of the world. Dinner and visit will be at The Sam Yoder Family Home tonight.
Day 3-5 Your days will be full and fascinating as you experience life in Holmes County Ohio. From homesteads to village life, to small sustainable manufacturing visits and the larger Pioneer Equipment Factory Tour, to a local quilt shop and dry goods store, to an Amish Leather goods producer and Wendell August Forge (buggy maker), your experiences will be informative and fun. Dining in Amish Country is a treat. Food is plentiful and quite often is Family Style dining.
Day 6 HOLMES COUNTY OHIO-ERIE, PA. This morning you will visit The Hershberger Farm Market and Amish Bakery.
